Nevermind the chocolates this Valentine's Day, here's something better

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but I've definitely spotted that candy hearts, boxes of chocolates, discounts on flowers and hearts are everywhere at the moment. And of course we can't forget the new fragrance launches gracing the counters! Yes, Valentine's Day is upon us and I've picked up one of the newest love themed launches - the latest scent from Coach.

Now, I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this perfume because Coach is not my most favorite affordable luxury, but I put my biases aside, picked up a sample of Coach Love, and breathed deeply.

Spice. That is what you instantly experience. This latest launch from Coach opens with the floral spiciness of carnation and green aspects of violet and immediately catches your attention. It warms into a sophisticated scent layered with patchouli, light musk and caramel-y amber. Finally, the dry down adds one more dulcet tone - soft wisps of powder.

Gentlemen, if your lady's cultured, refined, and possibly even a tad enigmatic ... skip the chocolates and flowers, you've just found the perfect gift!

Couture fantasy to fragrance: Marchesa Parfum d'Extase

Marchesa designer fashion label was launched in 2004 by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig. Their oft whimsical and romantic designs are inspired by the life ambition of Luisa Casati, an eccentric early-twentieth century Italian heiress, who aspired to be a living work of art. Upon its launch Marchesa met with immediate success, finding fans in celebrities and critics.

Luckily this exquisite label hasn't kept their fantasy from us every day bods who can't afford red carpet wardrobes! 2012 saw Marchesa pen a deal with J.C. Penny and partner with Target and Neiman Marcus - the results of which should be in shops by the end of this year. But if you can't wait until then to get your own bit of whimsy, head to Sephora now! Just this month Marchesa launched their first fragrance (exclusive to Sephora), Parfum d'Extase.

A light, yet intense floral fragrance, Parfum d'Extase is the exact embodiment of Marchesa's whimsical, romantic, and artistic label. From first whiff of the fragrance you are transported to the most fabulous floral shop you could ever imagine. You're surrounded by a gorgeous symphony of scents that, each in turn, have their own solo. Rose and jasmine meet powdery violet and sweet green iris and meld with the (synthetic) velvety, creamy, yet delicate and elegent base notes of Ambrox and Muscenone.

I don't tend to like foral fragrances, but Marchesa Parfum d'Extase is a light, airy, romantic and powdery-dry floral fantasy. It is everything the Marchesa brand is: fanciful, exquisite, artistic, and while I may never wear it, I can definitely appreciate its harmonious beauty.

Wrapped in BBW's Cashmere Glow

This past weekend saw the promotion of Bath and Body Works new Signature Collection scent, Cashmere Glow. Did you partake in the promo via Facebook and get your free 2oz sample? I did, and I can't tell you how great it was to walk in the shop, go straight to the cashier and receive my freebie! If you didn't participate, don't worry! It's currently on sale for $1, so if you want to pick one up it won't break the bank! Fabulous!

Cashmere Glow with vitamin e, jojoba, and shea butter is a familiarly pleasant and comforting scent. And, honestly, BBW should be proud (and possibly give a raise to their marketing team!) because for once I have to agree with their marketing! It actually does make me feel as if I'm wrapped in a cashmere blanket, warm and cozy on my couch in front of a fire on a cool autumn night. How did they manage to transport me to such a fantastic place? Why through the fragrance, of course! The scent is a delicate mix of sweet fruit, white floral, vanilla, and musk. The combined effect of these aromas makes a wearable, yet luxurious, scent, perfect for the coming cooler months.

I'm not often a BBW fan as their scents are usually overwhelmingly sweet, but not Cashmere Glow. It's warmingly subtle aroma will have you feeling comfortably confident, and others wondering what that wonderful scent you're wearing is!

Flanker Alert! Dior Addict Eau (so) Fraiche

Dior Addict is a sensual floriental which was originally launched in 2002 to great success. Since then flanker after flanker* has been rolled out and this summer is no exception! The Dior Addict range has expanded by two, the first of which we'll be looking at today.

Dior Addict Eau Fraiche opens with a delightfully bright bergamot hit entwined with juicy mandarin hints. It quickly warms and as the fragrance progresses to the heart a vibrant musk and quiet rose character emerge.

The fragrance is quite linear once the citrus dimensions settle. What remains is the heart, which is a refreshingly luminous (dare I say, fraiche!) citrus-floral-musk aroma.
In truth, I wasn't expecting much from this fragrance, but it's not the first time I've been proven wrong. Dior Addict Eau Fraiche is simply a great fragrance!

Have you tried this scent? Do you love it, do you hate it? Make sure to leave a comment below!

*After doing some research, it's clear that the range of Dior Addict flankers is actually getting quite confusing! Dior launched an Addict Eau Fraiche in 2004, but, looking at the 2012 Eau Fraiche olfactive triangle, it is a completely different fragrance. That said, if you compare this review to the 2004's olfactive triangle it appears that the fragrances are quite closely related to one another, if not in fact one and the same!

Also, one comment on NST noted that a salesperson at the Dior counter informed that past fragrances, Addict to Life and Addict 2, have been reconceptualized (new bottle, name, marketing, but same fragrance) and are now Addict Sensuelle and Eau Fraiche.

Do you have clarity on this confusing situation? Make sure to leave a comment below!

DKNY London Olympics - Oops! Be Delicious

Today begins the quest for gold medals as the first of the Olympic competitions kicked off in the United Kingdom. Yes, Friday is the official opening ceremony in London, but because the soccer competition takes so long to complete the first women's soccer matches were played today in Wales. If you're wondering, GB beat NZ 1-0, and the US beat France 4-2. Not a bad start, I'd say. Well, that is depending on who you're supporting!

But, does it really matter who you're rooting for? I'm not sure it does for DKNY's latest flankers in the Be Delicious range - aptly called DKNY Hearts The World.

The DKNY Be Delicious range first came into being with the launch of Be Delicious in 2004. Since then the apple shaped bottle has graced fragrance shelves in a multitude of variations - Be Delicious Men, Golden Delicious, Delicious Night, Delicious Candy Apples, Red Delicious, Red Delicious Men... The list is long and has not stopped growing; the newest fragrances in the DKNY Hearts The World range all 'heart' a major city: NYC, Paris, Rio, and, of course, London.

So, what does DKNY think London's scent should smell like? Sweat in honor of the athletes participating in the Olympics? Rose in honor of England's national flower? Let's find out.

DKNY Be Delicious Heart London opens with a bright sweet citrus scent tinged with the tiniest hint of bubble gum. It quickly warms to a gentle aroma of white floral and (yep!) rose. The dry down remains rose-y and settles on the skin well due to its creamy amber and soft musk undertones.

It is an uncomplicated fragrance that is fresh, pretty and a perfect accessory for a sunny summer day... or a rainy one if you're in London!

Summer Flanker Alert! Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme Chanel

Store shelves have been stocked full of summer flankers for months and since it is now officially summer I thought it time we investigate what's out there!

Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme by Chanel is our first flanker. It joins the Allure Homme range: the first fragrance of which was launched in 1999. Despite this scent having a long list of ancestors and being (yet another) flanker, I have to be honest with you. After I watched the below video I wasn't too upset to be indulging in Eau Extreme! (yes, the Chanel marketing team has done their job well - I'm sold before I've even tried it!!)

Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme begins its scent journey with fresh citrus and light mint notes which slowly dance their way to dry dimensions of soft woods and warming tonka bean and musk tones. Underneath all of this there is a hint of soapiness laying deep in the depths.

Overall it is a pleasant experience even though it's not very 'extreme' (i.e. not venturing from currently popular ingredients)!

Avon: Today. Tomorrow. Always. Forever...

Launched in spring 2012, Salma Hayek joins the Avon celebrity fragrance crew with the Forever scent in the Today Tomorrow Always range. How does her fragrance compare? Let's find out.
“I know love can Forever surprise me, time and time again.” – Salma Hayek, Actress, Mother, Producer & Director
As soon as you gently whiff Forever you are hit with heavy musk notes. The heart of the scent is powdery and interlaced with a light floral aroma. This aroma serves to heighten the fragrance from its warm musky-depths.

The scent becomes more interesting as it dries: the musk sinks quietly to the back which enables dry, peppery notes of pink peppercorn to come to the front and make themselves known. Besides this slight hint of intrigue, Forever is not a very complex fragrance and remains, overall, linear from top notes to dry down.

Avon Forever has good longevity and, due to the prevalent musk notes, has a classic fragrance air about itself, which makes it, I believe, a stalwart fragrance for the discerning 40+ woman.

The Big Pony Collection for Women 4

In the last few posts we've introduced you to the new line of fragrances from Ralph Lauren - the Big Pony Collection for Women. We've learned about the background to the range and also the marketing behind it. What we haven't once mentioned are the ever-mysterious juice creators: the perfumers.

Big Pony 1, the 'sporty' variant, was the creation of Bruno Jovanovic at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). Check him out - an attractive Frenchman who graduated from ISIPCA ; he now has about a decade of experience under his belt.

Big Pony 2, the 'sensual' variant, is from the nose of Honorine Blanc of Firmenich. Her perfumery training took place at a school in Paris, France, but she now lives (and works) in New York. Make sure to watch this clip of Honorine describing how she finds inspiration for her creations.

We go back to IFF for the creator of the 'free-spirited' variant Big Pony 3: Laurent Le Guernec. Laurent is French, a graduate of ISIPCA, and has been creating fragrances at IFF since February 2002.

Last (but of course not least), Big Pony 4, the 'stylish' variant, is from perfumer Olivier Gillotin of Givaudan. Like the aforementioned perfumers Olivier is French, but out of the three he has the most experience with about thirteen years of perfume formulation under his belt. So, how does his fragrance compare?

4 opens with creamy, softly sweet-warm notes of amber and obscure, heightening citrus undertones. These notes are quickly subdued by floral magnolia and green aromas. The green is so strong - like broken branches and fresh, dark green milky leaves woven together. The fragrance has an oriental, creamy, musk base that retains the intense green notes and brings a slight freshness to the warm fragrance.

This fragrance has three proprietary Givaudan molecules: cassyrein, cristallon and sylkolide. Now, to confeses, way at the back of this fragrance, I get a slight whiff of bug spray - almost as if there is some citronella hiding deep within the scent layers. I do wonder if it is one of these molecules. When you test this fragrance for yourself, come back and let me know if you can smell the note, too.

Although more an autumn/winter fragrance than a spring/summer one, this one will most definitely be getting a place on my shelf.

Bravo, Olivier, bravo.

On a side note ... I'm impressed, though not at all surprised, that the Big Pony Collection for Women fragrances were developed at each of the top three fragrance houses in the world!

The new addition to the BVLGARI Omnia family: Coral

omnis omnes omne omnia: each, every, every one (of a number); all (pl); all/the whole of. (just in case you don't have a Latin background and were wondering the meaning of omnia, a range of BVLGARI perfumes, like I was.)

BVLGARI launched the first fragrance in the Omnia family in 2003. It was self titled and was a spicy-gourmand-woody fragrance. I haven't experienced it for myself and I don't think that I'll be able to because it appears the fragrance is no longer in production. (Leave a comment below if you know otherwise!)

In 2005 Omnia Crystalline was launched, a fresh-fruity-woody fragrance. Next in line was Omnia Amethyste in 2007, which was followed by Omnia Green Jade in 2008. Sadly, I haven't had the chance to smell any of these yet! But don't worry because...

...this brings us to Spring 2012 and to the latest launch in the Omnia range:
Coral.
(which I've just smelled!)

BVLGARI Omnia Coral is a bright citrus-floral fragrance that immediately catches your attention. The citrus notes are very fresh and give the sense that you are surrounded by gorgeous bergamots, with maybe a few perfectly ripe mandarin oranges thrown in. The lily floral notes keep the fragrance light and fresh as the citrus ones wear off, and as it warms there are comforting hints of light musky-soapiness in the background which adds depth (and a sense of fresh-out-of-the-shower cleanliness) to the fragrance.

With spring now in full effect and summer just around the corner, this fragrance makes a great accessory for sunny weather and happy days.

The Sheerness of Burberry Brit

I'm feeling fabulous! Why? Let me tell you: while I was buying a pair of awesome shoes I noted that there was a free perfume sample at the counter which was mine for the taking! Shoes and perfume? How could the day get any better?!

Launched in 2007 as a limited edition, and brought back to shelves in 2010, Burberry Brit Sheer entered the flanker scene to what appears to be neutral reviews. (Should you want to peruse them yourself, you can check them out at Basenotes, Fragrantica and Osmoz.) But, what do we think about it here at Scents n Scentsibility in 2012?

I've just tested it and Wow! The top notes are very fresh and clean. There are light citral-soapy notes that warm into a very slightly powdery floral with the tiniest hint of marine way at the back. The musk of the dry down makes the fragrance heavier than when first sprayed, but the bright floral notes remain to lighten it and keep it smelling fresh.

This is definitely a fragrance you'll want to have at the ready when spring arrives, the sun comes out and the flowers start to bloom ... put this fragrance on and and you'll be springing and blooming as you step out into that gorgeous spring day!

Starting 2012 off fragrant with Michael Kors, Vera Wang & Escada

Needing some fragrance I took myself over to Ulta to see what was shaking in the way of new launches. Woohoo, I hit the jackpot! Which means I've got three newly launched fine fragrances reviewed for you here.

Let's begin with Island Michael Kors Very Bali (because it's winter and we'd all rather be on vacation somewhere like Bali. Admit it.) The packaging is enticing with a purple toned sunset, calm water, flowers and a palm tree. The fragrance is as agreeable as the packaging, and just as conventional. The top notes are sweet and floral with a tiny bit of citrus, which lifts the fragrance and keeps it quite light. The muskiness of the dry down warms the fragrance, but not too much. The musk mixes delicately with the bright florals to make a very nice, if not very unique, spring/summer fragrance.

Now, Valentine's Day is less than a month away so, while it's not really a new launch, it is only fair that we turn our attention to a romantic 2011 launch from Vera Wang: Lovestruck. This fragrance fell down at the first hurdle; I wasn't able to pull out any discernible top notes after first spraying the fragrance! I stared at my scent strip questioningly, and re-smelled it numerous times, but it was as if I hadn't sprayed anything on it! So, needless to say, the top notes are very light. But, the fragrance did pick itself up and the dry down notes are discernible. There is an underlying musk to the fragrance which mixes with vanilla bean and a bit of fruity-floral sweetness. It is a pleasant enough fragrance, but nothing to write home about.

Finally we have some Escada limited editions. There are three: Island Kiss, Rockin' Rio and Sexy Graffiti. Regrettably, I was only able to sample Island Kiss and Sexy Graffiti. Sorry Rockin' Rio, maybe next time!

Island Kiss took me by surprise because it only had a little of the signature sweetness that characterizes Escada fragrances. The rest of the top notes were extraordinarily clean with a nice soap-y, light citral scent. It's dry down was just as light and clean as the top notes, but the sweet Escada character was more evident once dry. I am very impressed by this fragrance - thumbs up, Escada!

Lastly I evaluated Sexy Graffiti and it was everything I expected from an Escada fragrance. It was loud, overly sweet: almost the personification of pink (in the form of scent, of course!). The top notes were a mixture of sweet berries and citrus, while the dry down was heavily citrus-y, which was made slightly dynamic by a hint of musk. Although, saying that, the dry down was sorely unimpressive as the fragrance had mostly disappeared. This is not surprising since citrus burns off quickly, which is why it is used so frequently as a top note. In the end, Sexy Graffiti is everything one would expect from an Escada fragrance.

Thus concludes my first successful trip to Ulta of the year and hopefully there will be many more to come. Bring on the 2012 launches, I say!

Launched with style: the new Diane fragrance from Diane Von Furstenberg

Back in October I received all kinds of alerts about a new fragrance launching from designer Diane von Furstenberg: Diane. Unlike other perfumes with their fascinating (and sometimes confusing) TV commercials, von Furstenberg opted for a modern way to advertise: the flash mob.

Throughout the course of October there were flash mobs in New York, Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Warsaw and Milan. All these flash mobs did their work - they got me excited about the fragrance and eager to learn what it was all about.

So, off to Sephora I went (the sole distributor of the fragrance) and here is what I discovered. Diane is a very womanly fragrance, opening with distinct top notes of patchouli that are combined with layers of caramel and musk and then mixed with light florals, which bring height to the fragrance. The fragrance is linear as it dries down, retaining the same scent throughout.

This fragrance is reminiscent of the powerhouse fragrances from the 1980s. Which isn't necessarily bad ... if you like that kind of thing.

Seasonal Anti-bacs?! The latest line of PocketBacs from BBW

Copyright (c) 123RF Stock Photos
It's the end of September, which means the stores are jam-packed with Halloween paraphernalia. There are bags of candy to buy, as well as humongous pumpkins for carving (I can't wait to get my hands on one of those!), but one thing I didn't realize was that the Halloween theme had made its way into personal care products.

Admittedly, I was greatly bemused when I walked into Bath and Body Works (BBW) on Saturday and saw they had a range of Halloween scents in convenient travel size lotions. Would you like some Wicked Spiced Pumpkin or is maybe Scream-A-Colada more to your taste?

I can't blame BBW, limited edition seasonal scents are an easy way to re-concept and re-invigorate tired fragrances or to test out new ones on consumers without too much consequence. So, I understand their Halloween body lotion and hand soap ranges, but Halloween Anti-bacterial Sanitizing Hand Gel?

When I got home I went on BBW's website and it turns out that somewhere along the line I missed that Anti-bac had become a hot ticket item. They have floral to gourmand to fruity variants in their trademarked PocketBac line. It is undeniable that with this line BBW introduced the question to consumers: Who wants plain old Purell when you can have a cute, fun smelling BBW anti-bac? Unsurprisingly, before I can answer that question, I'm going to have to get to smelling!

Zombie Tonic: Marshmallow.
Vanilla accented alcohol that dries into a soft musk.

Bat bite: Apple.
Helloooo Green Apple! The dry down smells like Granny Smith apple peel.

Phantom Pumpkin.
Pumpkin Spice Latte anyone? This scent is barely discernible until the dry down, which is very subtly pleasant indeed.

Candy Corn: Caramel.
The most lightly fragranced one thus far. At first there is a scent of alcohol and cream, which is reminiscent of first Bailey's and then Egg Nog, and then it dries down into a very light vanilla bean scent.

Gum ball.
Bazooka Joe! Or if you don't know what that is just imagine a pink bubble gumball! The scent is so strong and distinct, it's almost like you're chewing some bubblegum yourself.

Skulls: Forbidden Apple
Think McIntosh Apple

Bones: Monster Mint
Minty with chocolately hints.

Scary Cats: Black Cherry
One word: Robitussin. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing and, actually, in use it is a very sweet, yummy black cherry scent which sits nicely on the skin.

There you go - my evaluation of the eight scents that I picked up on their 8 for $5 deal. Now that I have smelled them, how about we get back to the question - Who wants plain old Purell when you can have a cute, fun smelling BBW anti-bac?

Well, I hate to admit this, and you might have sensed at the beginning that I was sceptical at best about the idea of seasonal anti-bacs, but you know what? They've convinced me - I definitely don't want plain, old, boring Purell! The question now is which of these Halloween Pocketbacs to use first!

Burberry Body: How to make a trench coat sexy, part 2

Back in August I learned from my sources that if I became a 'friend' to Burberry Body on Facebook I would receive an exclusive sample before the scent was available for purchase. It sounded like a good deal to me, but then I went onto the Burberry Body page on Facebook.

It turns out that I had to sell my soul (i.e. allow them to have all sorts of access to my FB page/info) to get this free sample. I debated about it for a couple minutes, but then decided my love of fragrance was worth handing over my soul for, especially if it gets me a new product before the launch date!

Oh, how wrong I was. I only received the sample this week - fourteen days after the launch date. There goes my soul for nothing, but on the bright side I now have a sample that I can evaluate, even if it is a bit delayed.

The fragrance opens with a strong hit of light, fresh and clean freesia (jasminey-orange) floral notes with a tiny bit of sweetness from a hint of peach. It quickly develops into middle notes of rose and iris (still keeping the overall light, fresh tone) and finally dries down into warm woody-musky notes that are kept light and fresh due to the sweet, floral scents that characterize this fragrance. There is nothing remarkable about it, but its dry down of musky-floral-sweetness is actually quite nice.

Thankfully, you won't have to sell your soul like I did to either sample or buy Burberry Body. As previously noted, it officially launched at the beginning of September and can be found in most beauty/department stores.

Which Blonde Are You?

Ahh, yes. The summer flankers have arrived and models with long blonde hair grace the advertisements of all three fragrances now out in your nearest department store.

First: the ever so seductive DKNY Be Delicious flanker - Golden Delicious.

The fragrance opens with a light floral scent of rose and lily, but underneath the innocent top notes lurk deep woody tones mixed with layers of musk. The bottom notes give a sensual dimension to the fragrance that keeps it from being a simple, straight floral.

The bottom notes make this a heavier fragrance that would be good for wearing in Fall, at night or (as the poster suggests) when being seductive.

Second: the wistfully sweet and innocent Marc Jacobs Lola flanker - Oh, Lola!

The top is light, sweet and citrus-y with elements of green notes, which lift the fragrance. It dries into a gentle and inoffensive white floral with small traces of musk.

This is a safe fragrance choice that is perfect for daytime wear.

Third: the classy, 'au naturel' Pure DKNY flanker - Pure DKNY Verbena.

Top note is verbena, no doubt about that, but the citrus note is quickly balanced out with a Ponds cold cream-esque note of musk and rose.

It is an instantly fresh and comforting fragrance (but maybe that's because the dry down reminds me of my grandmother!)

This is a good all-round scent for anytime wear.

So, what will you choose? The seductive Golden Delicious, the sweet, innocent Oh, Lola! or the classy, au naturel Pure DKNY Verbena?

As for me, (sorry flankers!) I've got my eye on the new Fall fragrance from Tom Ford - Violet Blonde launching this September. Stay tuned ...
